Is Today the Day???

They just put Ava on a mode where she has to do all of the breathing in hopes of taking her off of the vent today. Please keep her in your prayers as we go through this phase of getting one step closer to home. They are going to let her hang out on this mode for about an hour and do a blood gas to see how her body is tolerating it. If she does well, then they will try to extibate. My belly is in knots. I am excited that she has gotten to a point were they feel that it is worth trying again, but also scared that she may not tolerate it right now. There is always that chance too, where is she comes off she might have to go right back on. I just pray that she does well and is able to come off...it would be great for her to be off when daddy and Kaden come in tonight!!! I will keep you posted and let you know how things go as the day progresses.

We are all keeping Ava and your family in our prayers. It sounds like she is doing great. I'm so excited for you all. Hopefully you are one step closer to home. I'm also glad to read that you are trusting in your maternal instincts, Amy. We haven't been through anything compared to what you have, but I know it's scary to second guess our doctors and nurses. Maternal instincts are very powerful and I do believe the good doctors and nurses totally understand that as parents we are only doing our best to protect our babies. Trust in your instincts.

Love and prayers,

Gary and Diane Haverkamp

I found your blog through Rhett's blog. My daughter with T21 was also on ECMO when she was born, so seeing that both of your kids have been on it makes me sad. It's such an amazing, yet scary thing. I hope that Ava can come home with you soon. I'll keep all of you in my thoughts, and keep checking back in.

Ok, so I just caught up on everything -since my life was in a whirlwind for a few days. DONT EVER feel bad about being your daughters protector. I learned, as you have, that we have to be their voice. I had a nurse, when we were in PICU that I requested not to have again. Hated to do it, was sure she was good at her job, but I didnt feel comfortable with her as my sons protector while I was trying to sleep. I had her once, then they assigned her again and I stayed all night. THe next day I requested she not be with TUcker again. She just was not attentive enough to my liking. WE have that right. WE know our kids. I was in their face every day asking questions..I am sure most cringed when they found out they had Tucker because I got very bold with my questions. I will never forget one time they were trying to get an i.v in him, hard tick as it is. They had tried 3 times already and they were looking in the head for a good vein. Todd was in the room, I was out in the lobby. He came out and said for me to get in there and explained what was going on. He knew I would say ENOUGH. (I get mean that way--:)
Anyway, now that I have rambled. Hang in there. I wish I could have come down and met you. With all the tummy stuff I dont want to expose anyone until we are well. I could have given you a big hug! Hospital stays are very hard, hard on the family, just hard all the way around. I know we could test out of nursing school with the things we learn about while we are there.
I didnt know your hubby was a PO. So is mine. I am sure we could tell each other some stories, our hubbies could atleast. Todd was in Vegas for a few years being a cop. He loved the excitement of the Vegas life.
Anyway, thanks for checking in on us. Have a better day and enjoy your few day break. It will be hard not being in the middle of it, if you are like me you will wonder while you are gone if things are being done correctly-because you are not there watching every little thing. Try not to and enjoy it with Kaden. I am sure he willl love the time with you and you with him.
HUGS-Karen

You are always in our thoughts and prayers, Ava is a strong little girl and continues to amaze all of us!!
I also wanted to let you know Lindsay Dean had her baby, a girl named Olivia Nicole at 3:55 this morning at Olathe Medical Center. She weighed in at 6lbs 14oz and was 19 1/4 inches long. Both mom and baby are doing fantastic!
Your whole family are in their thoughts as well!
Big hugs,
Jess and Halle

My stomach is in knots for you!! I know the feeling. You always worry about the feeling of being so excited and almost don't want to get your hopes up knowing that it is possible that they might have to be re-intubated. I know for me, it's the biggest emotional rollercoaster I have ever been on.

We love you guys, and think of you, and keep you in our prayers all the time. You are an amazing family!!
